Terre Thaemlitz presents ‘Lovebomb/Ai No Bakudan’

Bergen Kunsthall welcomes legendary multi-media producer, writer, and DJ Terre Thaemlitz for a series of performances that explore the meaning of hospitality, silence and secrecy as tools for social organising. Thaemlitz, a transgendered performer and owner of Comatonse Recordings, has published and performed widely about identity politics, with an ongoing analysis of the socio-economics of commercial media distribution. In the face of increasing emphasis on exposure and over-sharing in everyday culture, Thaemlitz works with a commitment to silence as an active form of communication, and withdrawal and invisibility as necessary for survival.

On the first evening, Thaemlitz will present a new radio show ‘Hospitality, Secrecy and Other Useless Movements’ broadcast live from Bergen Kunsthall, together with long-time collaborator Laurence Rassel, a cultural worker and now Director of erg (école de recherche graphique – école supérieure des arts) in Brussels, whose work has centred around feminist organisational practices, open source technologies and institutional questions. On the second night, Thaemlitz will perform a rare live concert - an amalgam of lecture, audio and video- of her album ‘Lovebomb/Ai No Bakudan’. (2003).

Laurence Rassel once used the term 'useless movements' to describe how feminist practices have been displaced from mainstream notions of what is productive and of value. But ways of working dismissed as ‘useless’ by major culture industries can be transformed into an incredibly useful ‘uselessness’. Both Rassel and Terre Thaemlitz have made careers out of exploring these possibilities and methodologies for survival.

In a conversation presented as a live radio show both at Bergen Kunsthall, Rassel and Thaemlitz will explore the tensions and contradictions arising from the simultaneous needs for care, hospitality and non-intervention in today’s everywhere topic of inclusion. When the constant requirement to be inclusive is understood as a product of a dominant ideology, through which mass exclusions and injustices are still happening, what could hospitality mean as a model for organisation? And, in the way that through a rhetoric of speaking up and occasions such as PrideTM, major culture continues to ignore the violence towards those who feel as a minority group – until they make themselves visible and heard within the mainstream: can the historical functions of closets and secrecy inform attempts at organising and avoiding co-optation?

This will be the fourth time Rassel and Thaemlitz collaborate on a radio broadcast. The first was "The Laurence Rassel Show" (2007), an electro-acoustic radio drama commissioned by a German national broadcaster on themes of feminist anonymity and transgendered authorship, which was cancelled before broadcast but released as an album by Constant VZW, Public Record and Comatonse Recordings. Other programmes were produced for Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona (2014) and Arika’s Episode 7: We Can't Live Without Our Lives, Glasgow (2015).

Terre Thaemlitz presents ‘Lovebomb/Ai No Bakudan’

Terre Thaemlitz presents a rare live performance - an amalgam of lecture, audio and video - of her early 2003 album ‘Lovebomb/Ai No Bakudan’.

‘Lovebomb/Ai No Bakudan’ is an analysis of love as a cultural mechanism which enables otherwise unacceptable acts of violence, as demonstrated by domestic violence, a terrorist's love for her cause and America's vengeful love of freedom. Digitally processed spoken word samples narrate various scenarios of global violence... from a posthumous association between the roots of Italian Futurism and the 1906 lynching of three black men in Terre's home town, to the social abuses and neglect emburdened on the last lingering survivors of atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to Terre's personal post-queer-bashing traumas. Sharp video edits of animation, collage and found footage add new layers of depth and dark humor to the "Lovebomb" audio project.

At the request of the artists, there is no post-event video or audio documentation. An interview with Rassel, Thaemlitz and Landmark Curator Eva Rowson will be available online.

Terre Thaemlitz (Tokyo, Japan) is an award winning multi-media producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label. Her work combines a critical look at identity politics - including gender, sexuality, class, linguistics, ethnicity and race - with an ongoing analysis of the socio-economics of commercial media production. He has released over 15 solo albums, as well as numerous 12-inch singles and video works. Her writings on music and culture have been published internationally in a number of books, academic journals and magazines. As a speaker and educator on issues of non-essentialist Transgenderism and Queerness, Thaemlitz has lectured and participated in panel discussions throughout Europe and Japan. As of January, 2001, he resides in Japan.

Laurence Rassel (Brussels, Belgium) is a curator, teacher, organizer currently based in Brussels. From 2008 to 2015 she was Director of Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, an institution created in 1984 by the artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art. From 1997 to 2008, Rassel was member of Constant, a non-profit association and interdisciplinary arts-lab based and active in Brussels in the fields of art, media and technology. Currently she is Director of erg (école de recherche graphique – école supérieure des arts) in Brussels.

Part of a series of live commissions in autumn 2018 at Bergen Kunsthall exploring feminist organisational practices and modes of communication - and the structures that support these. Connecting to other parts of Bergen Kunsthall’s programme including Education, Landmark’s annual one-night festival POEKHALI! and Unge Kunstkjennere (UKK), the Kunsthall’s collective of young people.
