Utmark & Perfect Sound Forever present: GROUPER (US)
With Ruins (Kranky), Grouper has released one of the best albums of the year in 2014. Utmark joins hands with Perfect Sounds Forever and at last brings Liz Harris to Bergen and Landmark!

A contemplative, almost ambient expression has dominated Liz Harris’s releases as Grouper. Over a comp of piano or acoustic guitar, often looped and immersed in reverb, fuzz and distorted sound effects, Harris’s vocals hover as if in a misty, atmospheric sonic landscape. Ruins was recorded during a stay in Portugal with a 4-track recorder, a single microphone and a piano. The recording registers the acoustics of the space and random sounds which become an integrated part of the expression. About the album Harris has stated: “The album is a document. A nod to a daily walk. Failed structures. Living in the remains of love. I left the songs the way they came (microwave beep from when power went out after a storm); in hope that the album bears some resemblance to the place that I was in.”

In its summing-up of the best album of 2014, Pitchfork writes of Ruins: “In the end, the saddest, most vulnerable structure is the human body – none has ever survived forever, or lasted for the ages – but Ruins reminds us how much poetry and beauty can be found in the simplest moments before that inevitable silence.”
